Art in the Windows

Mid-Manhattan Library branch of the New York Public Library

Portal #1 and #2 were two site-specific installations in the windows on 5th Avenue of the Mid-Manhattan branch of the New York Public Library, visible 24/7 from the sidewalk. They consisted of 4 vertical planes of mirror paper and painted paper mounted on plexiglass, one behind the other inside a deep window cavity masked off with black foam rubber, Using almost entirely reflected color and mirror reflections, the viewer’s gaze is directed through a series of successively smaller quadrilateral openings, creating an optically disorienting 3-dimensional experience of “painting with light”.
